## Synopsis

Carlos, rey emperador (2015-2016) is a Spanish national-television historical drama series created by Oriol Ferrer for La 1. Across seventeen episodes in a single season, it follows Charles of Habsburg, played by Álvaro Cervantes, as he arrives in Spain to take up an inheritance that stretches across Germany, Burgundy, the Low Countries, Aragon, Castile, North Africa and the Americas. Charles must mature into a statesman while menaces gather around him and his counselors offer both wise and treacherous advice. Principal figures include Francisco I de Francia, played by Alfonso Bassave, and Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, played by Félix Gómez, whose rival ambitions and court maneuvering press on the young king. Each episode of this 75-minute serialized period piece builds through negotiations, betrayals and shifting alliances rather than standalone cases. Set in sixteenth-century Renaissance Europe, the series balances palace intrigue with the weight of a sprawling dynastic empire. Its tone is measured, stately and sober, with a contemplative sense of responsibility settling on a young ruler. Fans of The Tudors, The Crown and Reign will find resonance in its royal court politics, dynastic pressure and portrait of power being learned under fire.
