## Synopsis

River (2015) is a British crime miniseries created by Abi Morgan for BBC One. Stellan Skarsgård plays John River, a gifted but troubled London detective whose grip on reality frays after the death of a colleague. Nicola Walker stars as Jackie 'Stevie' Stevenson, a fellow officer drawn into the hunt, while Adeel Akhtar and Lesley Manville round out the principal cast. The engine of the story is River's pursuit of a suspect across the city, a chase that leaves him at odds with his own superiors and in a precarious position. Across six hour-long episodes, the series follows him as he tries to bring closure to the mother of a murdered teenager, who holds him responsible for failing to keep his word. The storytelling is a single continuing thread built on investigation, interior disintegration and moral strain. Set in present-day London, its atmosphere is bleak, rain-slicked and tense, with a melancholic emotional register that rewards patient viewing. Fans of Luther, The Killing and True Detective will find resonance in its brooding detective psychology and grief-driven procedural tension.
