## Synopsis

Apocalypse: Stalin (2015) is a French national-television historical documentary miniseries created by Isabelle Clarke and Daniel Costelle for France 2. Across three episodes of roughly 53 minutes each, it follows the path of Joseph Stalin from his early career as a bankrobber in the Caucasus to his consolidation of power as the cold-blooded leader of the Soviet Union. Rather than dramatized scenes, the series builds its narrative from archival footage and photographs, with a narrator (voiced by Mathieu Kassovitz) guiding viewers through the revolutionary years and the political maneuvering alongside figures such as Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky, who appear in the archive material. The engine of each episode is the question of how a single ambitious man outmaneuvered rivals in a turbulent country, and the sober, measured tone lets the cumulative weight of events carry the viewing experience. Its atmosphere is austere and grave, closer to a prestige history program than sensational entertainment. Fans of The Death of Stalin, Hitler: The Rise of Evil and The Soviets will find resonance in its blend of political history and archival realism, though the series is a documentary rather than a satire or drama.
