## Synopsis

Vikings: Athelstan's Journal (2015) is a Canadian and Irish historical drama series created for the History channel, a short single-season spin-off of the Vikings saga. Centered on the young priest Athelstan (George Blagden), the series follows a man of faith who is taken among Northmen and must reconcile his belief in God with the pull of Odin. Each brief episode is built from his private reflections, which narrate the customs, rituals, and morals of his raider companions as he balances the thrill and horror of raids with the aftershock of combat. Travis Fimmel's Ragnar Lothbrok and Katheryn Winnick's Lagertha appear in archive footage, anchoring the wider Viking world without dominating the frame. The engine is an outsider's slow shift from condemning his captors to recognizing their humanity, a turn carried by intimate voiceover rather than large set pieces. Its shape is a single thirteen-episode season, each installment running only a few minutes, giving it the feel of a brooding, contemplative diary. The tone is sombre, reflective and quietly harrowing, with an ancient-world atmosphere of mud, longships, and cold northern landscapes. Fans of Vikings, Rome and the reflective voiceover of Better Call Saul will find resonance here.
