## Synopsis

Houdini & Doyle (2016) is a British period crime series created by David N. Titcher and David Hoselton for ITV1. Michael Weston plays escapologist Harry Houdini and Stephen Mangan plays author Arthur Conan Doyle, a skeptic and a believer who are drawn together to investigate cases nobody else can solve. Rebecca Liddiard plays Constable Adelaide Stratton, who is often caught in the middle of their clashing views. The engine of the show is the trio's pursuit of murderers who dress their crimes in apparent ghosts, vampires, monsters and poltergeists, forcing each case to be tested against what is real and what is merely staged. Its single ten-episode season works as a case-of-the-week mystery with a continuing partnership between its leads. Set in Edwardian London, the series mixes period detail with a playful, witty tone and a strain of eerie suspense. Fans of Sherlock, Ripper Street and The X-Files will find resonance in its blend of rational detection and the uncanny.
