## Synopsis

Joker Game (2016) is a Japanese anime spy thriller series produced by Production I.G and broadcast on AT-X, adapted from a novel. Set in 1937 Japan on the eve of World War II, it follows Jirou Gamou, an antihero agent operating under that name within a secret espionage unit called the D Agency. The unit was founded by Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki of the Imperial Japanese Army, who rejects the usual pool of military academy graduates and instead recruits outsiders trained in the arts of manipulation. Gamou's engine is a harrowing undercover mission to recover secret documents titled Black Notes, and each episode unfolds as a tense, cerebral operation in which deception, infiltration, and counter intelligence matter as much as firepower. Officers, foreign agents, and rivals circle one another in a web of shifting loyalties, and the atmosphere is cool, austere, and quietly menacing, with a steady undercurrent of dread about the militarist state closing in. Viewers who enjoy Mission: Impossible, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., or the period political intrigue of Legend of the Galactic Heroes will find much to savor in this single-season, twelve-episode serialized story.
