## Synopsis

Marcella (2016-2021) is a British crime drama series created by Hans Rosenfeldt for ITV1. Anna Friel plays Marcella Backland, a Metropolitan Police detective who gave up her fast-tracked career to raise a family, only to find her marriage collapsing when her husband Jason (Nicholas Pinnock) abruptly leaves her. Returning to the Met's Murder Squad, she throws herself into homicide cases in London while estranged from her teenage daughter and young son. Her colleagues, including DI Rav Sangha (Ray Panthaki) and DI Tim Williamson (Jamie Bamber), push her to keep up with the squad, and each investigation pulls her deeper into the city's grimmer corners. The engine of the show is a fragile professional woman trying to hold herself together through the stress of a case-by-case grind and the pressure of a broken home. Across three seasons and twenty-four episodes, the format leans on a serialized British police procedural, with murder investigations unfolding over multiple episodes. The tone is bleak, tense and emotionally raw, with a paranoid, dread-filled atmosphere and a sharp focus on personal fallout. Fans of The Killing, Unforgotten and Line of Duty will find resonance in its gritty London setting and its unflinching portrait of a detective whose private life bleeds into her casework.
