## Synopsis

The Durrells (2016-2019) is a British period family comedy-drama created by Simon Nye for ITV1, adapted from a memoir. Keeley Hawes plays Louisa Durrell, a financially strapped widow who moves her four children to a dilapidated, electricity-free house on the Greek island of Corfu in 1935. Josh O'Connor plays the aspiring writer Lawrence, and Milo Parker plays Gerald, a young boy obsessed with collecting and studying animals. Their new life is shaped by Greek locals such as Spiros Halikiopoulos (Alexis Georgoulis) and Theo Stephanides (Yorgos Karamihos), whose friendships and everyday dealings pull the family into the island's rhythms. The engine of the show is simple: a household trying to make ends meet while every week brings new mishaps, romances, animal rescues and neighbourly feuds. Episodes are self-contained vignettes built around the family's small adventures, across four seasons of episodic yet character-driven storytelling. The mood is sunlit, warm and gently comic, with a wistful affection for a vanished pre-war world. Fans of All Creatures Great and Small and My Family will find the same blend of eccentric household humour and pastoral charm, along with the easy, cosy appeal of a period family drama.
