## Synopsis

Oshin (1983-1984) is a Japanese serialized morning television drama created for NHK, a defining example of the asadora tradition that airs as a daily fifteen-minute episode across a single long season of 297 episodes. Ayako Kobayashi plays Oshin as a young girl sent into servitude, Yuko Tanaka takes over as the adult Oshin, and Nobuko Otowa portrays her in old age, with Shirô Namiki, Michio Oji and Pinko Izumi among the principal figures around her. The engine of the story is a girl's stubborn wish to survive and better her circumstances while poverty, hunger and the rigid master and servant relationships of her world keep pushing back. Each episode is a small chapter of labor, scarcity and quiet determination, and the arc stretches over decades of change from the Meiji period into the upheaval of wartime and the rebuilding of postwar japan. The tone is earnest, melancholic and deeply humane, with an emphasis on perseverance and dignity rather than spectacle. Based on a true story, it is a sprawling life saga in the vein of Roots and The Good Earth, and fans of intimate historical family drama will find resonance in its unhurried, emotionally direct storytelling.
