## Synopsis

For the Sake of the Republic, also known as Towards the Republic, is a Chinese historical television series created by Zhang Li and broadcast on CCTV in 2003, comprising a single season of 68 forty-five-minute episodes. Set in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it dramatizes the political turmoil that brought down the Qing Dynasty and paved the way for the founding of the Republic of China. Empress Cixi, played by Lü Zhong, stands at the center of an imperial court where Li Hongzhang (Wang Bing) negotiates the empire's survival, Guangxu Emperor (Li Guangjie) struggles for authority, and Yuan Shikai (Sun Chun) maneuvers for advantage. Sun Yat-sen (Ma Shaohua) represents the republican challenge to the throne, and reformers such as Kang Youwei (Sun Ning) and Liang Qichao (Zhang Hongrui) push for change. The engine of the series is a slow, layered contest of loyalty, ambition and reform, with each episode unfolding as a chain of court deliberations, factional schemes and rebellious plots. Its tone is solemn, weighty and politically charged, with a sober, documentary-leaning seriousness about a nation in crisis. Viewers drawn to epic historical politics will find resonance in The Last Emperor and The Tudors, though this series' focus on a nation's collective destiny sets it apart.
