## Synopsis

Madoff (2016) is a American miniseries created by Ben Robbins for ABC, a four-episode dramatization of the rise and fall of Bernie Madoff. Richard Dreyfuss plays the silver-tongued financier Bernie Madoff, whose outwardly respectable investment firm hides a Ponzi scheme that bilked victims of around $65 billion. Blythe Danner plays his wife Ruth, while Peter Scolari and Frank Whaley bring to life his son Peter Madoff and the persistent investigator Harry Markopolos, who warned regulators for years and was ignored. The engine of the story is the gap between the polished face of Wall Street and the ledgers that never add up, as each episode shows the lies needed to keep new money flowing and the strain they place on a family that wants to believe. Set in modern New York and the financial world around it, the limited series is a measured, cool-toned true crime drama in the tradition of American prestige dramatizations. Its tone is sober and quietly tense rather than sensational, with a focus on the mechanics of deception and the people who paid for it. Viewers who enjoy The Big Short, Inside Job and Billions will find resonance in its portrait of financial deceit and institutional failure.
