## Synopsis

Hip Hop Evolution (2016-2020) is a Canadian documentary docuseries created by Darby Wheeler and produced by Banger Films, distributed across HBO and Netflix. Across four seasons and sixteen roughly fifty-minute episodes, the series follows the origins of hip hop from the crowded house parties, rec rooms and public parks of the Bronx to the global culture it became. Its engine is the testimony of the people who built the sound: pioneers such as Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Ice-T and Ice Cube speak directly on camera as themselves, alongside Shad, with archival footage and music filling in the story. Rather than a single chronological line, the show moves through regional scenes, including East Coast, West Coast, Chicago and Atlanta, so each episode lingers on a particular place and its sound. The tone is nostalgic and celebratory, with an insider's affection for the music, though viewers hoping for a single clear thread of development may find the geographic pivots scattered. Fans of Soundbreaking and Respect will find resonance in its artist-led account of a Black American musical tradition, and of Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus for its roots-seeking approach to a genre's history.
