## Synopsis

Ming Dynasty in 1566 (2007) is a Chinese national-television historical drama series broadcast by Hunan Television. Set in the reign of the Jiajing Emperor in sixteenth-century Ming China, it follows a web of court officials, eunuchs and princes navigating the emperor's volatile favor. Chen Baoguo plays the Jiajing Emperor, while Ni Dahong plays the powerful grand secretary Yan Song and Zhang Zhijian plays his son Yan Shifan, and Huang Zhizhong appears as the upright official Hai Rui. The engine of the series is the constant maneuvering for influence: officials must weigh loyalty against self-preservation as rival factions scheme for advantage at court and along the empire's frontiers. Each episode unfolds through petitions, palace councils, and quiet private negotiations, building into a single continuous story across one season of forty-six episodes. Its atmosphere is weighty, measured and austere, with a sober tone of political dread and moral reckoning. Set in palace halls and government offices of 1560s China, it carries the gravity of a period drama. Fans of The Tudors, Wolf Hall and Empresses in the Palace will find resonance in its court intrigue and its portrait of power under an unpredictable ruler.
