## Synopsis

Izetta: The Last Witch (2016) is a Japanese animated historical fantasy series that aired on AT-X. Its protagonist, the witch Izetta, is voiced by Himika Akaneya, who serves the young princess Ortfiné Fredericka von Eylstadt, voiced by Saori Hayami. Together they defend the small Alpine principality of Eylstadt against the imperialist nation of Germania, which spreads a continental war across Europe. The engine of the series is loyalty: Izetta has pledged herself to her princess and must use her magic to protect a country that is outmatched by a mechanized military. Each episode turns on battlefield confrontations, diplomatic pressure, and the cost of fighting with a single weapon against an army. The series is set in an alternate version of Europe during the early years of the Second World War, rendered with bright landscapes and dramatic aerial combat. Its tone blends heroic earnestness with melancholy and moments of tenderness between its leads. Its twelve-episode run is a single continuing story of resistance and devotion. Fans of Strike Witches, Valkyria Chronicles and Full Metal Alchemist will find resonance in its mix of wartime stakes, fantastical power, and close bonds between its heroines.
