## Synopsis

Hirugao: Love Affairs in the Afternoon (2014) is a Japanese romance drama series created by Yumiko Inoue for Fuji TV. Aya Ueto plays Sawa Sasamoto, a young housewife whose quiet suburban routine is upended when the glamorous Rikako Takigawa (Michiko Kichise) moves into her neighborhood and begins an affair. After a near discovery, Sawa covers for her neighbor and is drawn into a relationship with a handsome teacher, Yuichi Kitano (Takumi Saitoh), while discovering desires she had never acknowledged. The engine of the series is the tension between marital duty and secret longing, played out through clandestine meetings in weekday afternoons, strained household conversations, and the guilt that follows each lie. Its eleven episodes move at a measured pace, favoring lingering close-ups and interior unease over spectacle. The tone is melancholic and sensual, with soapy melodrama giving way to moments of quiet intimacy. Fans of Anna Karenina and the suburban infidelity dramas of Japanese television will find resonance in its study of desire, obligation and complicity between women. Set in contemporary Japan, it is a single-season limited series that reads as a intimate character drama rather than a conventional romance.
