## Synopsis

The Ice Cream Girls (2013) is a British four-part-style miniseries created by Dorothy Koomson for ITV1, adapted from her novel and produced by Left Bank Pictures. Jodhi May plays Poppy Carlisle, who has served seventeen years for a murder she insists she did not commit, and Lorraine Burroughs plays Serena Gorringe, her former friend, now a happily married mother who returns to the same seaside town to care for her dying mother. Flashbacks to Young Poppy (Holli Dempsey) and Young Serena (Georgina Campbell) show the summer of 1995, when two vulnerable teenage girls were accused of killing their schoolteacher. Martin Compston plays Marcus Hansley, the man at the center of the killing. The engine of the story is a search for the truth: Poppy wants her name cleared and will not stop asking who really did it, while Serena must face the town and her own buried memories. Across three episodes of roughly forty-seven minutes each, the series moves between the past and the present, building suspicion and grief in equal measure. The tone is bleak, intimate and emotionally raw, with a melancholic seaside atmosphere. Themes of wrongful conviction, lost friendship and the long cost of silence drive the drama. Fans of Broadchurch, The Killing and The Missing will find resonance in its small-town mystery and haunted characters.
