## Synopsis

The Sea Wolf (1971) is a German television literary adventure miniseries created by Jack London for ZDF, adapted from his novel Der Seewolf. Writer Humphrey van Weyden (Edward Meeks) is thrown overboard in a shipwreck in the Bay of San Francisco and rescued by the seal-hunting schooner Ghost, commanded by the brutal Captain Wolf Larsen (Raimund Harmstorf). Across four ninety-minute episodes, the engine of the story is a battle of wills: a refined literary man must survive a hostile crew and a tyrant who respects his mind even as he torments his body. The shipboard world is claustrophobic, built from daily labor, rough crew rivalries and the tension of a voyage that cannot easily end. Other principal players include Beatrice Cardon as Maud Brewster and Emmerich Schäffer as the cook Thomas Mugridge, whose presence widens the moral pressure on the ship. The register is severe and contemplative, a classic sea adventure with philosophical undercurrents about power, cruelty and civilization. Fans of Moby Dick, Master and Commander and Treasure Island will find resonance in its mix of maritime peril and literary argument. This single-season miniseries offers a complete, self-contained adaptation.
