## Synopsis

Maigret (2016-2017) is a British television adaptation created for ITV1 of Georges Simenon's novels, a small four-episode mystery series. Rowan Atkinson stars as Jules Maigret, the methodical Paris police commissioner whose craft lies in listening closely to witnesses and reading the people around a crime rather than chasing forensic spectacle. He is supported by Leo Staar as Inspector LaPointe and Shaun Dingwall as Inspector Janvier, while Alexander Campbell and Zsófia Rea appear in the Lecoin family storyline that threads through the cases. Each feature-length episode, running close to ninety minutes, is built around a single investigation into a death tangled with secrets, class tension and the shadowy corners of a French city. The series moves at an unhurried pace, favouring atmosphere, mood and carefully played dialogue over action. Its tone is restrained, melancholic and quietly tense, with a rain soaked, smoky sense of place. Fans of Maigret's earlier screen versions, along with Wallander and Foyle's War, will find a similar appetite for patient, character driven detective work.
