## What critics say

## Synopsis

Ozark follows Marty Byrde, a Chicago financial planner whose partner launders money for a Mexican drug cartel. When a fatal mistake leaves the family owing dangerous people, Marty relocates his wife Wendy and their two children to a lake resort in the Missouri Ozarks, where he must turn a struggling community into a clean-looking vehicle for dirty money. Every scheme breeds a bigger one, and the family's loyalties fracture under pressure from cartel enforcers, a volatile local crime clan, and federal investigators. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney anchor the series with restrained, morally compromised performances, while the Ozarks' stark beauty contrasts with the rising dread. Tense, claustrophobic and steadily escalating, the show trades on suspense and bleak choices rather than easy heroics. Its four seasons deepen into a study of how far ordinary people will bend to protect what they love, and how quickly a family can become the very thing it fears. Viewers drawn to crime dramas with strong character work and a relentless sense of consequence will find it gripping, if often grim, and its ending is earned but costly.
