## Synopsis

The New Edition Story (2017) is an American music biography miniseries created for BET. It follows the R&B vocal group New Edition, with Woody McClain as Bobby Brown, Algee Smith as Ralph Tresvant, Elijah Kelley as Ricardo Bell, Bryshere Y. Gray as Michael Bivins, Keith Powers as Ronnie DeVoe, and Luke James as Johnny Gill, as the young singers push from their humble Boston neighborhoods toward national stardom. Wood Harris appears as Brooke Payne, and younger versions of the members are played by Jahi Di'Allo Winston, Tyler Marcel Williams and Caleb McLaughlin. The engine of the story is the ambition of teenagers chasing a record deal, juggling rehearsals, rivalries, managers and the pressures of a sudden fame that threatens to pull them apart. Told across three long episodes in a single limited run, the drama moves from local talent shows and crowded studio sessions to the glossy music industry of Hollywood. The tone is warm and nostalgic, with a celebratory pulse of hit songs and youthful friendship tempered by the bruising costs of success. Fans of Respect, Straight Outta Compton and Ray will find resonance in its portrait of a musical act's rise.
