## Synopsis

Juana Inés (2016) is a Mexican historical drama miniseries created by Patricia Arriaga-Jordán for Canal Once. Arcelia Ramírez plays the adult Juana Inés, a self-taught scholar and poet, with Arantza Ruiz as her younger self. The story follows her struggle to keep learning and writing in a seventeenth-century colonial society that expects a woman to submit to marriage or convent discipline. Her pursuit of knowledge puts her at odds with powerful clergy, including Padre Antonio Núñez de Miranda, played by Hernán del Riego, and with the viceregal court, where Virreina figures and viceroys shape the politics around her. Across seven fifty-minute episodes, the series builds a character-driven biography in which each chapter is a confrontation over her books, her faith, and her right to speak. The tone is measured, reflective and quietly defiant, with lush period detail and candlelit interiors carrying a melancholy sense of constraint. Fans of Elizabeth and Juana la Loca will find resonance in its portrait of a historical woman who refuses to apologize for her mind. The result is a contemplative, dignified limited series about intellect, faith and resistance in colonial Mexico.
