## Synopsis

American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story (2017) is a US docuseries created for Prime Video, following the charismatic founder of Playboy magazine through ten roughly 46-minute episodes. Hugh Hefner himself narrates the story from his own unique perspective, drawing on never-before-seen footage from his private archive, while actors Matt Whelan as Hefner and Shara Connolly as Barbi Benton appear in dramatized reconstructions alongside figures such as Marilyn Cole, Christie Hefner, and Art Paul. The engine of the series is the portrait of a man who built a publishing empire around a carefully cultivated image, and the way that image collided with the people around him. Each episode layers archival material with staged scenes to reveal the ambitions, the parties, and the private contradictions behind the bunny logo. Set across the postwar American decades of the sexual revolution, the series moves through Chicago offices, mansion life, and the magazine's changing cultural standing. The tone is intimate, provocative, and at times unsettling, with a steady undercurrent of critique beneath the glamour. Viewers drawn to the sexual revolution, media empires, and polarizing biographical documentaries in the vein of The Jinx and Super Pumped will find resonance here.
