## Synopsis

Anne with an E (2017-2019) is a Canadian period drama series created by Moira Walley-Beckett for CBC Television, adapted from the classic novel Anne of Green Gables. Amybeth McNulty plays Anne Shirley, a spirited orphan whose imagination and stubborn intellect collide with the rules of a small farming community. After a childhood of abuse in orphanages and strangers' homes, she is mistakenly sent to live with the elderly siblings Marilla Cuthbert (Geraldine James) and Matthew Cuthbert (R.H. Thomson) on their farm near Avonlea. Her engine is the desire to belong, and each episode builds around schoolroom rivalries, friendships with Diana Barry (Dalila Bela), a longing for acceptance and the slow, stubborn work of winning over neighbors who judge her. Gilbert Blythe (Lucas Jade Zumann) adds a rivalry that softens over time. Across three seasons of roughly ten episodes each, the show moves through a continuing story rather than isolated cases. Set in the late 1890s on Prince Edward Island, it has a warm, wistful, emotionally sincere register, with moments of harsh cruelty handled honestly. Fans of Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie and Heartland will find resonance in its heartfelt period atmosphere.
