## Synopsis

Broken Promises (2013) is a Colombian telenovela crime drama created by Klych Lopez for Caracol TV. Set in a contemporary present with no named year, it follows three young women, Ana Aguirre (Julieth Restrepo), Frida Aguilera (Aislinn Derbez) and Seleni Aristizabal (Nicole Santamaria), who are persuaded by promises of a better future and then sold into prostitution. The engine of the series is their struggle to survive captivity and to escape while risking their own lives and the safety of the families they left behind. Each episode turns on fresh threats from the traffickers who control them, shifting alliances among the captives, and the constant pressure of hidden debts and betrayals. Across a single season of sixty-one episodes, the story unfolds as one continuing serialized arc with the melodramatic heightening typical of the form. The tone is harrowing and emotionally intense, with moments of solidarity and hope cutting through the bleakness. Its theme of exploitation and resilience will appeal to viewers who enjoy the intensity of Ugly Betty, the gritty criminal world of Gomorra, and socially conscious dramas about trafficking.
