Critics broadly regard New World as a lavish, romantic costume melodrama with strong production design and committed lead performances, though its historical liberties and uneven plotting draw criticism.

## Synopsis

New World (Novo Mundo, 2017) is a Brazilian telenovela created by Thereza Falcão and Alessandro Marson for TV Globo, a single-season run of 160 episodes. Anna Millman (Isabelle Drummond) is a Portuguese teacher who falls for Joaquim Martinho (Chay Suede), an actor, and the two meet in Europe before travelling to Brazil together alongside Leopoldina of Austria (Letícia Colin), the future empress. Their romance develops while the country moves toward independence, so every private meeting, betrayal and secret alliance is bound up with the politics of a court and a nation in upheaval. Dom Pedro I (Caio Castro) and Domitila de Castro (Agatha Moreira) add royal intrigue, while Thomas Johnson (Gabriel Braga Nunes) and Ingrid Guimarães as Madame Dalila bring the scheming and rivalry of the wider cast. The engine is a restless melodrama in which love, ambition and loyalty pull characters in opposite directions, delivered in the classic daily-soap rhythm of long, emotionally charged episodes. Set in early nineteenth-century Brazil, the series has a lush, romantic and sweeping tone, closer to a costume melodrama than a sober history. Fans of Escrava Isaura and Bridgerton will find a similar mix of period finery, forbidden passion and political stakes.
