## Synopsis

Ekaterina (2014-2023) is a Russian national-television historical drama series aired on Russia-1, following a sixteen-season-spread, four-season serialized period saga set in 18th century St. Petersburg. Marina Aleksandrova plays the Prussian princess Sofia Frederica, a young bride from an impoverished German branch who arrives at the imperial court to be married to the heir, while Vladimir Yaglych plays the ambitious courtier Grigory Potemkin and Pavel Tabakov plays the heir Pavel. Veteran Vladimir Menshov and Konstantin Lavronenko appear as scheming nobles around the court. The engine of the show is the struggle of an outsider bride to survive a court where every alliance is a bargain, and where the aging Empress Elizabeth has arranged the marriage to secure a future for her own line. Each season is built as one continuing story across four seasons and fifty-six episodes, with rival factions, secret letters, and dynastic maneuvering driving the plot forward. The look is lavish costume drama, with palace interiors, ornate ceremonies, and candlelit intrigue. The tone is stately and tense, weighted with political unease and quiet ambition. Viewers who enjoy The Crown, The Great, and palace intrigue dramas will find the same blend of royal pageantry and court politics here, set against the early days of the Romanov dynasty.
