## Synopsis

Below the Surface (2017-2019) is a Danish crime drama series created by Kasper Barfoed for Kanal 5. Set in Copenhagen, it opens on an early October morning when fifteen people are taken hostage from a subway train, setting off a national crisis. Hostage negotiator Philip Nørgaard (Johannes Lassen) and his colleague Ebbe Møller (Kasper Leisner) work to keep the captives alive while police and political leaders struggle against the clock. Paprika Steen plays Naja Toft, and Flemming Enevold plays Hans Hejndorf, both pulled into the crisis as its consequences spread through the city. The engine of the show is the tension between negotiation and force, as every decision risks lives and every hour tests the institutions around it. Episodes are built around the standoff's shifting demands, procedural maneuvers, and the human cost to hostages and families. Across two seasons of eight episodes each, the story stays a single continuing crisis rather than a case of the week. The tone is taut and grim, with a claustrophobic, wintry realism. Fans of The Killing, The Negotiator and 24 will find resonance in its procedural suspense and its grounded, ensemble-driven pressure.
