## Synopsis

The New Legends of Monkey (2018-2020) is a New Zealand and Australian fantasy adventure series created by Craig Irvin and Gerard Johnstone for TVNZ 1 and ABC Me, later on Netflix. Loosely inspired by the sixteenth century Chinese fable Journey to the West, it follows a teenage girl and a trio of fallen gods on a perilous journey to end a demonic reign of chaos. Chai Hansen plays Monkey, a mischievous fallen deity, alongside Luciane Buchanan as the determined Tripitaka, Josh Thomson as the gluttonous Pigsy, and Emilie Cocquerel as the steady Sandy. Each episode is a self-contained leg of the quest, with fights against monsters and sorcerers built into a larger arc that moves the band toward the demon Mothrax. The show runs across two seasons of ten episodes each, with a loose serialized thread. Its tone is playful and kinetic, mixing slapstick banter with fast martial arts action and colorful fantasy worlds. Fans of Xena: Warrior Princess, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Monkey Magic will find resonance in its mythic journey, its reluctant fellowship and its family friendly humor.
