## Synopsis

Little Women (2017) is a British period drama miniseries created by Heidi Thomas for BBC One, adapting Louisa May Alcott's novel. Set in 1860s New England during the American Civil War, it follows the four March sisters, Jo (Maya Hawke), Meg (Willa Fitzgerald), Amy (Kathryn Newton) and Beth (Annes Elwy), as they move from childhood into young womanhood. Their mother Marmee (Emily Watson) holds the household together while their father is away at war, and neighbour Laurie (Jonah Hauer-King) and his grandfather (Michael Gambon) enter the girls' lives. The engine of the series is the everyday friction of sibling rivalry, ambition, first love and the search for a place in the world, with each of its three hour-long episodes built from small domestic struggles and quiet choices. Aunt March (Angela Lansbury) adds sharp wit to the household. The tone is warm, wistful and emotionally measured, with the wartime backdrop kept at a distance from the girls' daily concerns. Fans of Anne with an E, Pride and Prejudice and Little House on the Prairie will find a similar resonance in its tender portrait of growing up in a 19th century family. Its concise three-episode form makes it an easy, affecting watch.
