## Synopsis

Hilda Hurricane (1998) is a Brazilian miniseries created by Glória Perez for TV Globo, a single-season romance drama of 32 episodes. Ana Paula Arósio plays Hilda Furacão, a young model who breaks off her wedding and becomes the most famous courtesan in a 1950s Brazilian city, known as Hilda Hurricane. Her hopes turn on Rodrigo Santoro's Frei Malthus, a novice spoken of as a saint, whom she falls for while he remains bound by the severe doctrine of Padre Nelson (Paulo Autran), a conservative priest intolerant of even minor sins. Danton Mello plays Roberto Drummond, an old friend of Malthus and a communist reporter who sets out to interview Hilda and uncover what truly drove her change of heart. The engine of the story is a forbidden romance pressed on every side by religion, scandal and political suspicion, with each episode building the tension between private longing and public judgment. Its atmosphere mixes melodrama with period texture, as the middle classes grow frightened of a leftist threat and the city's moral order tightens. Fans of Terra Nostra and Dancing Days will find resonance in its blend of passionate romance and political unrest, a classic Latin American telenovela tradition told in a single complete arc.
