## Synopsis

The Miniaturist (2017) is a British two-part period drama miniseries created by John Brownlow for BBC One, adapted from the novel by Jessie Burton. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Petronella Brandt, a young bride who marries wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt (Alex Hassell) and moves into his grand house in 17th century Amsterdam. Romola Garai plays Marin Brandt, the household's guarded and watchful sister-in-law, and Paapa Essiedu plays Otto, whose presence hints at hidden lives within the city. Nella struggles to win her husband's affection while the household runs on rigid routines and unspoken rules. A mysterious miniature cabinet arrives, commissioned from a miniaturist who begins to reflect the house's secrets back at her. The engine of the story is a young woman trying to read the people around her while learning how much of her new life is curated. Across two ninety-minute episodes, the tone is meditative, sentimental and quietly tense, with rich interiors, candlelit rooms and a melancholic atmosphere. Fans of Gosford Park, Jamaica Inn and The Night Manager will find resonance in its elegant period detail and slow-burn domestic intrigue.
