## Synopsis

La Mante (2017) is a French crime miniseries created by Alice Chegaray-Breugnot, Nicolas Jean and Grégoire Demaison for TF1. Carole Bouquet plays Jeanne Deber, the notorious serial killer who terrorized France more than two decades earlier and is nicknamed La Mante. Forced out of her isolation by police, she agrees to help track down a copycat on one condition: she will speak only with her son Damien Carrot, played by Fred Testot, a cop who became a detective because of his mother's crimes and has refused all contact with her since her arrest. Their uneasy collaboration drives the engine of the story, as the mother's dark knowledge of killers clashes with the son's wounded resolve and the investigation's mounting pressure. Frédérique Bel, Pascal Demolon and Robinson Stévenin round out the investigative team. The six-episode series unfolds as a single continuing case, a limited series of tense interrogations, cat and mouse pursuit and buried family history set in contemporary France. Its mood is brooding, claustrophobic and psychologically intense, with a strong emphasis on the haunted past. Fans of Dexter, Hannibal and Engrenages will find resonance in its serial killer premise and its French procedural tension.
