## What critics say

Critics found the stylized, anime-inspired world visually striking but its thin story and self-indulgent tone left the single short season largely unsatisfying.

## Synopsis

Neo Yokio (2017) is an American adult animated science fiction comedy series created by Ezra Koenig for Netflix, a single-season limited series of six roughly 23-minute episodes. Kaz Kaan, voiced by Jaden Smith, is a wealthy young bachelor in a gleaming futuristic city who pursues romance, style and social standing while fighting supernatural forces with the help of his faithful mecha-butler Charles, voiced by Jude Law. Principal voices include Tavi Gevinson as Helena St. Tessero, Susan Sarandon as Aunt Agatha, and Jason Schwartzman as Arcangelo Corelli, each drawn into the glittering, sinister world of the city's elite. Each episode mixes fashion-driven social maneuvering with monster-hunting spectacle, so the glamour and the danger arrive together. The show is set in a stylized, invented metropolis that borrows heavily from Japanese anime aesthetics and New York high society. Its tone is deadpan, irreverent and absurdly earnest, with a dreamy surrealism that recalls Aqua Teen Hunger Force's offbeat humor and the cult appeal of Big Mouth. Viewers who love stylish, offbeat animated comedy with a supernatural edge will find it resonant.
