## Synopsis

The Witness for the Prosecution (2016) is a British two-part miniseries created as an adaptation of the short story by Agatha Christie for BBC One. Toby Jones plays John Mayhew, a solicitor drawn into the investigation of a glamorous heiress found dead in her London townhouse. Andrea Riseborough plays Romaine Heilger, a figure whose loyalties are never quite clear, while Billy Howle plays Leonard Vole, the man charged with the killing. The engine of the story is the hunt for the truth: each interview, alibi and letter peels back another layer of the wealthy circle around the victim, and every witness seems to have something to hide. Across two hour-long episodes the drama moves briskly from the police investigation into a tense courtroom battle, where testimony shifts and certainty dissolves. Its polished costume drama surfaces a cool, elegant register tinged with unease, with period detail carrying the atmosphere of London society. Fans of Agatha Christie puzzle plots, Broadchurch-style British crime drama and Downton Abbey's period sheen will find resonance here. The result is a compact, cleverly constructed mystery that rewards close attention.
