## Synopsis

Shadows over the Balkans is a Serbian historical crime drama created by Dragan Bjelogrlić for RTS 1, set in the turbulent late 1930s Balkans. The series follows a web of power in which high politics, local interests, capital and crime blur into one another. Gendarmes, merchants and local strongmen negotiate uneasily with each other, and every favor carries a debt while every investigation runs into a powerful protector. Stanko Pletikosić is a central figure threaded through the story, and the narrative builds a steadily tightening web of suspicion across its seasons, giving it the shape of a continuing serialized saga rather than isolated cases. The tone is tense and atmospheric, with a melancholic weight over a region balanced between empires and ideologies. Violence is present but measured, and the drama rests on conversations, bargains and the slow pressure of compromised loyalties. Its period texture, political menace and portrait of ambition tangled with corruption make it a brooding watch for viewers who enjoy historical crime with layered intrigue and moral compromise.
