## Synopsis

Shot in the Dark (2017) is an American reality docuseries for Netflix. Three rival freelance stringers, Howard Raishbrook, Scott Lane and Zak Holman, work the streets of Los Angeles after dark, racing to reach crime scenes, house fires and car accidents before police scanners, rival crews and other cameramen get there first. Every episode is built from the same engine: each man wants footage that a local news outlet will pay for, and the obstacles are the clock, the competition and the unpredictable emergencies themselves. The eight episodes of roughly thirty-five minutes each follow the men as they film real victims and first responders, then bargain over what their clips are worth. The camera stays close and unpolished, giving the show a raw, documentary feel. Its tone is tense, voyeuristic and gritty, with a bleak undercurrent about what violence and tragedy become once they are turned into saleable news. It is a single self-contained season with a clear shape, not a sprawling saga. Fans of Cops, the night-crawling thriller Nightcrawler and the small-market media satire Breaking News in Yuba County will find resonance in its look at the commerce of catastrophe.
