## Synopsis

A Place Further than the Universe (2018) is a Japanese anime series produced by Madhouse and broadcast on AT-X, a seinen-leaning coming of age drama with comedic touches. Its thirteen episodes follow high school girls, led by Mari 'Kimari' Tamaki (voiced by Inori Minase) and Shirase Kobuchizawa (voiced by Kana Hanazawa), alongside Hinata Miyake (voiced by Yuka Iguchi) and Yuzuki Shiraishi (voiced by Saori Hayami), as they pursue a reckless dream of traveling to the furthest south, the wilderness beyond the heavy sea. The engine of the show is the expedition itself: each episode trades on logistical hurdles, cold, fatigue, and the friction of strangers forced into close quarters, while the characters wrestle with the broken pieces of their own lives and the courage to keep moving. It is a single, continuous season of connected episodes rather than a case-of-the-week format. The setting is a contemporary Japan that gives way to a harsh polar landscape, rendered with a sense of wonder at unfamiliar sights, sounds, and silence. The tone balances earnest optimism with wistful introspection and warm humor, and the emotional register is hopeful yet bittersweet. Fans of Laid-Back Camp and Yuru Camp will find resonance in its gentle friendships and outdoor journeys, and those drawn to Anohana will appreciate its emotional honesty about adolescence.
