## Synopsis

Mother (2018) is a South Korean drama thriller created by Chung Seo-kyung for tvN, a single-season limited series of sixteen hour-long episodes. Lee Bo-young plays Soo-jin, a temporary elementary school teacher who recognises the signs of abuse in her pupil Hye-na (Heo Yool), a quiet girl who insists she is alright while being mistreated by her mother Ja-young (Ko Sung-hee). Soo-jin's decision to become the child's mother drives the engine of the story: she must build a false identity and keep it hidden while navigating the suspicion of the police and the shifting loyalties of those around her. Son Suk-ku and Lee Jae-yoon fill out the wider cast of characters whose secrets gradually surface. Each episode is built from careful investigation, quiet domestic confrontations and mounting dread as the protective lie grows harder to sustain. The tone is tense and emotionally raw, with suspense rooted in ordinary school and apartment life rather than spectacle. Atmosphere and moral weight carry the viewing experience, with the aching bond between a substitute mother and a neglected child at its center. Fans of Big Little Lies, Stranger and The Killing will find resonance in its blend of maternal devotion, domestic peril and Korean-drama intensity.
