## Synopsis

Sinatra: All or Nothing at All (2015) is a two-episode American biographical documentary miniseries created for HBO and directed by Alex Gibney. Frank Sinatra narrates his own life through hours of archived interviews, with commentary from the people closest to him, including voice contributions from actors Gina Gershon as Ava Gardner, Christine Baranski as Ruth Berle and Vincent D'Onofrio as Dean Elson. The engine of the film is a question of self-invention: the songs Sinatra picked for his famous 1971 Retirement Concert in Los Angeles become a personal map through his career, his loves and his reputation. Each episode interweaves recordings, rarely seen concert footage and reflective talk, so the music and the images carry the emotional weight as much as the words do. The result is a limited series set in mid century American show business, a portrait of ambition, glamour and the cost of fame. Its tone is nostalgic, intimate and quietly reflective, with a swinging, melancholic undertow in the music. Viewers who enjoy Amy, Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight and the more reflective strand of HBO's prestige nonfiction will find resonance here.
