## Synopsis

The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling (2018) is an American two-part documentary miniseries produced by Apatow Productions. Built around the life of stand-up comedian and television writer Garry Shandling, it weaves together interviews with nearly four dozen friends, family members and colleagues, among them Judd Apatow, Kevin Nealon, Bob Saget, Merrill Markoe and his brother Mike Shandling. The engine of the series is the search for the man behind the famous comic persona: the film draws on decades of television appearances alongside Shandling's lifetime of personal journals, private letters and intimate home audio and video recordings. Rather than a conventional chronological rundown, the two long episodes let his own words and private footage carry much of the weight, while the testimonies of those who knew him add humor, affection and candid complication. The result is a reflective, warm and often wistful portrait of creative ambition, self-examination and the gap between public performance and private struggle. Its tone is intimate and contemplative, with the comic's own voice running through every episode. Viewers who enjoy comedian biographies and behind the scenes looks at the entertainment industry will find resonance here, in the vein of Crossfire Hurricane and Tig.
