## Synopsis

Shadows of the Past (2014-2015) is a Mexican telenovela created by María del Carmen Peña, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, and Víctor Manuel Medina for Las Estrellas. Its engine is a rivalry between two families in the village of Santa Lucía. Roberta Lozada (Susana González) nurses an inferiority complex that follows her like a shadow, while the wealthy Mendoza household at the ranch Las Ánimas is headed by Severiano Mendoza (Alexis Ayala) and Candela Rivero de Mendoza (Alejandra Barros). Their son Cristóbal (Pablo Lyle) and Aldonza Alcocer (Michelle Renaud) are drawn into romance and betrayal across the class divide. The series is built from long episodes of confrontations, secret loves, and vengeful schemes, with a single continuing story of one season and 137 episodes. Its tone is operatic melodrama, heightened and emotional, with envy and status anxiety driving each turn. Fans of Rubí, La Usurpadora, and Maria la del Barrio will find resonance in its soap opera machinery of inheritance, rivalry, and reconciliation, set in a provincial Mexican village whose estates mark social standing.
