## Synopsis

Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman (2017) is a Japanese comedy series created for TV Tokyo, a single-season run of twelve 24-minute episodes. Matsuya Onoe plays Kantarou Ametani, a stoic book salesman who leads a double life, slipping away from his desk to pursue a glimpse of sweets heaven and recording each indulgence on a secret sweets blog. Ren Ishikawa plays Kanako Dobashi, with Sarutoki Minagawa as Toru Miyake and Hazuki Shimizu as Erika Sano rounding out the office circle around him. The engine is simple and charming: a buttoned-up worker's search for the next perfect treat, with each episode built around sampling a different Japanese or Western confection. The deadpan contrast between his expressionless corporate life and his earnest appetite for dessert gives the show a gentle, wistful, comforting register. Set in contemporary Japan, it lands in the tradition of japanese salaryman comedy and food-centred slice of life. Fans of Kodoku no Gourmet, The Solitary Gourmet and Samurai Gourmet will find the same appetite for small pleasures and quiet escapism here, served in short, breezy episodes that are easy to pick up at any point.
