## Synopsis

Mystery Road (2018-2020) is an Australian outback crime drama created for ABC TV, running two seasons of six episodes each. Detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) is sent to a remote cattle station after a child vanishes, and he works alongside local police officer Emma James (Judy Davis) as the search turns into a probe of an old injustice that the community has long kept quiet. Jay's own family history and the strained relations between police and the Aboriginal people of the region give the case personal weight, and the investigation moves through interviews, tense confrontations and slow reveals rather than neat case-of-the-week puzzles. Deborah Mailman and Tasma Walton also appear in principal roles. The atmosphere is dusty, austere and quietly foreboding, with wide empty landscapes that emphasize isolation and the way a small town can hold its secrets. Its brooding, unhurried pace and morally complicated characters will appeal to viewers who enjoy Top of the Lake, Broadchurch and the bleak Western noir of Fargo, a limited mystery series that rewards patient attention.
