## Synopsis

New Amsterdam (2018-2023) is an American medical drama series created by David Schulner for NBC. Ryan Eggold plays Dr. Max Goodwin, a newly appointed medical director who refuses to accept no for an answer as he tries to overhaul America's oldest public hospital. Janet Montgomery co-stars as Lauren Bloom, a determined colleague who shares the daily struggle, while Jocko Sims as Floyd Reynolds and Tyler Labine as Iggy Frome round out the principal staff. Goodwin's engine is simple and relentless: he wants to disrupt the status quo, cut through red tape, and deliver exceptional care for underfunded patients, while skeptical doctors and staff have heard promises like his before. Each episode is built around a patient's unusual medical case and the personal dilemmas of the staff who treat it, giving the series a case-of-the-week rhythm within a continuing story across five seasons. The tone is hopeful and warm, with emotional patient stories balanced by workplace humor and romantic subplots. Set in present-day Manhattan, it has the idealistic energy of ER and the heartfelt reformist optimism of The Good Doctor, appealing to viewers who want uplifting hospital drama with a strong sense of purpose.
