## Synopsis

On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019) is a US dark comedy drama series created by Matt Lutsky and Robert Funke for Showtime. Kirsten Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a recently widowed, impoverished water park employee in early 1990s Orlando who schemes and cons her way up the ranks of a glossy, multi-billion dollar pyramid scheme, the same machine that ruined her finances in the first place. Théodore Pellerin, Beth Ditto, Mel Rodriguez and Ted Levine round out the principal cast, with Ted Levine playing Obie Garbeau II, a figure at the center of the company's aspirational hustle. The engine of the series is Krystal's hunger to escape debt and grief by out-hustling the people around her, with each episode built from recruitment pitches, motivational rallies, family strain and escalating deceptions. Presented as a single self-contained season of ten episodes, the story is a bleak yet sardonic satire of American ambition and financial desperation. Its tone blends wry humor with a harsh view of the economic dreams sold to ordinary people. Fans of Breaking Bad, Barry and Fargo will find resonance in its morally compromised antihero, its 1990s Florida texture and its darkly comic grift.
