## Synopsis

Stepmom and Daughter Blues (2018) is a Japanese television family drama created by Yoshiko Morishita for TBS, a single-season run of ten hour-long episodes adapted from a manga. Haruka Ayase plays Akiko Iwaki, a sharp, capable businesswoman who marries a widower and suddenly must become the mother of an eight-year-old girl, Miyuki, who is still grieving her late mother. Takeru Satoh plays Akira Mugita, and Yôsuke Kawamura plays Tomoyoshi Tomoi, while Yumi Aso plays Kazuko Shimoyama, a neighborhood woman who knows Miyuki well and becomes Akiko's unlikely ally. The engine of the series is Akiko's stubborn effort to earn a child's trust after every polished, well-meant plan falls flat, and each episode is built from small domestic setbacks, neighborhood encounters and quiet breakthroughs. Its tone is warm, gently comic and sincere, with a hopeful, inspirational arc that rewards patience. Set in present-day Japan, it moves through ordinary neighborhood life, with a light touch of fate and a bakery backdrop. Fans of This Is Us, Kids Are Alright and Hotel Hwal-kka will find resonance in its blend of tender family drama and slice of life comfort.
