## Synopsis

Story of Yanxi Palace (2018) is a Chinese costume drama created by Hui Kaidong and Wen Deguang for iQiyi. Wu Jinyan plays Wei Yingluo, a sharp and witty seamstress who enters the imperial palace to uncover the truth behind her older sister's death, believing the imperial guard Fucha Fuheng, played by Xu Kai, responsible. Her strategy is a double game: she draws the attention of his sister, the Empress Fucha, to win a transfer into Changchun Palace, then must hide her true aim while concubines and maids scheme for imperial favor. Nie Yuan plays the emperor Hongli, and Charmaine Sheh Sze-man plays a rival consort. Across one continuing story, each episode is built from intrigue, rivalry and clever deceptions among palace women. Set in eighteenth century Qing dynasty Beijing, the series balances sumptuous period costume with a rising undercurrent of romance and moral ambiguity. Its tone is witty, propulsive and melodramatic, tinged with yearning and cutthroat rivalry. Fans of Empresses in the Palace and Legend of Zhen Huan will find much to savor in its layered court politics and a heroine who turns wit into a weapon.
