## Synopsis

Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (2018) is a Chinese historical drama series created by Wang Jun for Tencent Video. Zhou Xun plays Ulanara Ruyi, a consort who learns the treacherous politics of the Qing imperial court and climbs the ranks toward the position of empress. Wallace Huo plays Emperor Qianlong (Aisin-Gioro Hongli), whose affection for her is tested as the palace grows more dangerous. Ning Chang plays Keliyete Hailan, one of the rival women whose schemes shape the struggle for favor. The engine of the story is Ruyi's effort to survive each new plot against her, from concubine rivalries to conspiracies aimed at the throne, while trying to hold onto her place and her marriage. Each episode is built from palace maneuvering, whispered alliances, and the constant threat of punishment, and the arc unfolds across one continuing run of 87 episodes. The set design, costumes and intricate court rituals create a lavish, claustrophobic world. The mood is melancholic and tense, with a steady undercurrent of regret and loneliness behind the grandeur. Fans of Empresses in the Palace and Story of Yanxi Palace will find resonance in its female-led harem politics and long-form imperial intrigue.
