## Synopsis

The Road to Calvary (2017) is a Russian historical drama series created by Konstantin Khudyakov for NTV. Set in St. Petersburg during World War I and the gathering political unrest that would become the revolution, the story follows two sisters, Dasha Bulavina (Anna Chipovskaya) and Katya Bulavina (Yuliya Snigir), as they cope with turbulent romances while history is made around them. Around them move doctor Dmitri Bulavin (Sergey Koltakov), the family's central anchor, along with Arkadi Zhadov (Andrey Merzlikin), Alexey Bessonov (Anton Shagin) and Liza Rastorgueva (Svetlana Khodchenkova), whose loyalties and desires pull against the tightening pressures of wartime city life. The engine of the series is personal: each character wants love, stability, or a way out, and the larger forces of war and political unrest keep closing in on their choices. Told across a single twelve-episode season of roughly fifty minutes each, it is a serialized character drama rather than a case-of-the-week format. Its tone is melancholic and tense, with an elegiac, sorrowful register over ordinary domestic scenes. Fans of Doctor Zhivago, Downton Abbey and War and Peace will find resonance in its blend of intimate romance and sweeping historical upheaval.
