Audiences rated this three-episode BBC adaptation as a panned, uneven reimagining of H. G. Wells that leans on period atmosphere more than its alien threat.

## Synopsis

The War of the Worlds (2019) is a British three-part science fiction period miniseries created by Peter Harness for BBC One. Eleanor Tomlinson plays Amy and Rafe Spall plays George, a couple who defy the rigid expectations of Edwardian society to build a life together, only to find their ambitions swallowed by an alien invasion. Robert Carlyle appears as Ogilvy, a figure drawn into the escalating struggle against an enemy beyond human comprehension. Across its three episodes the engine is simple and urgent: the couple wants safety and each other, while the invaders advance through the English countryside and London. Each episode is built from close, character-driven set pieces of fear, flight and improvised survival rather than sprawling battles. The setting is a turn of the twentieth century England rendered in period detail, and the tone is sombre, tense and romantic, with dread foregrounded over spectacle. Fans of Doctor Who, Ripper Street and the 1953 film adaptation of H. G. Wells's novel will find resonance in its blend of Victorian-era textures and speculative menace.
